Portfolio assessment

Three workstreams ran together: converting paper claims to EDI 837, resolving provider identity against the enterprise master, and replacing the legacy claims engine. Each was reviewed monthly on what it changed for the business, not on output counts.

InvestmentEvidence lensWhere it stood
Claims automationNet automation, manual-review share, rejections400,000+ claims converted over the program; keying team redeployed
Provider identityFalse matches, fallouts, match rate against the master99% match in the proof of concept; migration funded
EDI shredding replacementClaim data capture, enhancement turnaround and received-to-paid mappingI led the replacement of Microsoft BizTalk with homegrown EDI shredding directly into a normalized datamart before adjudication. Capturing complete claim data reduced enhancement turnaround by 50% and improved received-to-paid mapping and CMS reporting. The LifePRO engine replacement, daily reconciliation and paper-to-EDI conversion were separate projects.
ReconciliationReceived against processed, dailyDaily audit in place; fallout surfaced for reprocessing

Economic interpretation

Sample review: include exception handling and recovery, not only the automated path, in cost per claim. Test whether gains survive end-to-end accounting. Compare conversion gains with manual review and recovery: a conversion rate that rises while manual review rises faster would fail that test. Annual program result: The mailroom program saved about $1M a year.
